Beyond Politics: Why Prop 44 Threatens Our Core Mission at Halo

October 20, 2026

At Halo, we generally strive to keep our platform focused strictly on health, care delivery, and patient support—leaving political debates to the pundits. We believe healthcare should unite us, not divide us.

However, there are moments when a legislative measure moves beyond politics and directly threatens the foundation of how care is delivered in our communities. Proposition 44 is one of those moments.

Our Mission Comes First

Our core mission has always been simple: expand access to compassionate, high-quality healthcare for everyone, especially those who rely on community health clinics as their primary lifeline.

Prop 44 directly threatens to undercut that mission. By slashing $1.7 billion from community clinics in its first year alone—and billions more in subsequent years—this reckless ballot measure threatens to force hundreds of community clinics across California to cut back vital patient services or close their doors permanently.

For millions of patients—including low-income families, seniors, children, and veterans—these clinics aren’t just facilities; they are where they see their primary doctor, receive preventative care, manage chronic illnesses, and keep their families healthy.

Why Prop 44 Harmfully Impacts Community Health

The consequences of Proposition 44 reach far into every corner of California’s healthcare delivery system:

  • Shuts Down Hundreds of Clinics: With initial funding cuts exceeding $1.7 billion, community health centers will simply not have the operational resources required to remain open, shutting down crucial local access points.
  • Penalizes Essential Patient Services: Prop 44 creates financial penalties for clinics that invest resources in critical healthcare staff and vital patient programs, directly harming patient outcomes.
  • Puts Politicians Between Patients and Doctors: Prop 44 hands oversight authority to politicians and the State Attorney General to dictate the medical services clinics can provide. Healthcare decisions belong between patients and their doctors, not state officials.
  • Severe ER Overcrowding & Skyrocketing Costs: When community clinics close, millions of patients will have nowhere to turn except hospital emergency rooms for basic care. This will exacerbate ER wait times, strain emergency doctors and nurses, and increase healthcare costs for all taxpayers and families.

Standing with Doctors, Nurses, and Patients

Taking a stand on Prop 44 isn’t about playing politics; it’s about protecting our patients, supporting our dedicated doctors and nurses, and preserving the local healthcare infrastructure that keeps California healthy.

We are proud to stand alongside a broad coalition of trusted healthcare leaders opposing this measure, including:

  • California Medical Association
  • California Academy of Family Physicians
  • California Hospital Association
  • California School-Based Health Alliance
  • California Black Health Network
  • National Association of Social Workers California (NASW-CA)

When a policy directly jeopardizes the people and communities we serve, staying silent isn’t an option.
